Melody, in Melody Burning, is dying on the inside. She’s an actress in the hit TV show Swingles and is a popular singer. You’d think she’d be perfectly happy. But she’s not. Her mom keeps pushing this career and she’s completely miserable. She has even written songs about suicide. This isn’t the only problem Melody faces; there is a stalker living in the walls of the new apartment she moved into, the Beresford. She doesn’t know who he is but he knows exactly who she is. Melody McGrath. The love of his life. Ever since he saw her, he knew he’d do whatever it takes to save her and protect her. He doesn’t remember his name or how he ended up in the walls of the Beresford (so he named himself after the building he lives in), but now he knows one thing: he loves Melody McGrath. As she meets him and realizes he’s just an innocent boy, she realizes that she too loves Beresford. Unfortunately, it’s too late for Melody and Beresford to live a secret love life. Melody already told her mom about the “stalker”, and now he is taken away from her. It’s too late to explain to her mom that Beresford would never harm her. There is one more problem that Melody will face within the Beresford. Through all the paparazzi and stalkers, there is a much darker secret within the walls of the Beresford, and only this “wild” boy, Beresford, knows about it. As he is whisked away, he knows that he has to do one thing; save Melody. Beresford will do whatever it takes but what if it’s already too late? Does he have enough time to escape from this prison they’ve taken him to and make it to the Beresford alive? Or will death stop Beresford before Melody can be saved?

I loved Melody Burning. It was very romantic, suspenseful, and engaging. If you liked stories such as Titanic, West Side Story, or Romeo and Juliet, you’ll love this modern twist of a love story. I’d recommend this book to 13-year-old to 17-year-old girls. Teen girls will love this book because of its romantic twist. No one under 13 should read this book because it has a lot of adult content such as violence and sensuality. Melody Burning is only 215 pages and it will be a very quick-read if you choose to read it. The author is Whitley Strieber and all I can say is well done Whitley. This was a wonderful book, a reasonably realistic story, and an inspiring one too.
