Maggie is starting her first year of high school, and her first year of public school. Before this year, her mother had always home schooled her. But since her mother left, Maggie feels like her family is drifting apart. Her three older brothers are absorbed in their own interests and their father is busy with work, leaving Maggie alone. Maggie finally finds friends in the brother-sister duo of ‘punks’, Lucy and Alistair. To top off Maggie’s troubles, a ghost is haunting her.
Friends with Boys is funny and serious, and at certain times, tense. I enjoyed reading this book because the author easily portrayed teenage social situations. The ghost really only helps move the story along until the end of the book, where the ghost comes in as a bigger character.
The drawing in this graphic novel is realistic, yet cartoon like at the same time. The story deals with fighting the usual high school stereotypes, such as ‘jock’ and ‘theater geek’.
The graphic novel is also online at www.friendswithboys.com Faith Erin Hicks also has her own website, www.faitherinhicks.com
