What do you get when you mix time travel, kidnap, science and a mystery? One possible outcome would be the novel Alex and the Amazing Time Machine by Rich Cohen. In this book, Alex is a mostly normal kid; he likes to spend time with his friend Todd, and he loves to read. But, Alex isn't quite as normal when you get to know him, as he may have seemed at first glance. Alex doesn't read books that an average 5th grader would, but instead he reads large, old books about time travel and alternate dimensions. Alex is completely content like this until he approached by two strangers asking about a dingus. Then, his older brother is kidnapped, and from there his life spirals. After these odd events happen, Alex becomes determined to save his brother. With an iPod, some mirrors, and help from his friends, Alex attempts to build a time machine to go back and save his brother. If you want to know how Alex's plot turns out you will have to read the book. I had a good time reading this book. I felt that it had a good mix of science, adventure, and a bit of mystery. I would recommend this to readers ages nine and up because younger readers may not understand some concepts, but older readers would find the book to have a good story. I feel this book would appeal more to readers who enjoy science and mystery, because there are very much of both. This was a very quick read, only 161 pages, so it would make a nice summer book for a car ride, a plane ride, or just to read at home. Overall I found Alex and the Amazing Time Machine to be quite a good book.
