Are you searching for a captivating fantasy read for this summer? Peaceweaver by Rebecca Barnhouse is just that! This novel is a companion to The Coming of the Dragon, but it is not necessary to read that in order to understand Peaceweaver.
Hild is a 16 year old sister-daughter to the king of the Shylfings. One day she is out with her cousin, the prince, when a group of suspicious men sneak up behind him. Hild realizes that they are going to murder him so she kills the leader. You would have thought that the king would be grateful for her protecting his son’s life, but instead she is blamed for this incident. Poor Hild is cast to be a peaceweaver for the tribe whose citizen she has killed. A peaceweaver is someone who marries either the king or the queen from the enemy tribe in order to prevent a war. The journey is deadly, and along the way she realizes that something is pursuing them. Will she be able to escape this horrible new life, or will she have to battle the monster, or even die?
The beginning of this novel was a little bit hard to follow, and same with the first part of the journey. But the other parts were written very well and had me wishing to learn more about what happened to Hild. This book has 323 pages and thirty-two chapters. I recommend this book to everyone who likes fantasy and even a little bit of romance. This is definitely a book for advanced readers, with lots of great word choice. I think that everyone ten and up would enjoy this book.
