When 15-year-old twins, Sophie and Josh Newman go to work in San Francisco, it seems like just another ordinary Thursday. And then Josh, torn from his search in the cellar for supplies, is lured up by the strange and noxious scent of rotten eggs and mint. And he witnesses his employer, Nick Fleming, and a strange man he has never before seen, throwing balls of pure energy at one another, wrecking the quaint little bookshop in an impossible battle.
It is here that the world changes for two seemingly normal individuals; it is here that the children enter a strange, ancient world of monsters, immortals, and gods for the first time. It is here that Sophie and Josh Newman must begin to fulfill their roles that were prophesied by someone who was never human ten thousand years ago on an island that people have searched for since the time of Aristotle.
“The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel” by Michael Scott is composed of six epic novels; “The Alchemyst,” “The Magician,” “The Sorceress,” “The Necromancer,” “The Warlock,” and, finally, “The Enchantress.”
For months I have devoured every word written by the Irish master. And I came to the last, so awestruck even now that my hands shake as I write these words. These books are not for the faint of heart; there are monsters so twisted and mutated it is nearly unspeakable, things that are inhumanly disgusting, and the books are intense and even terrifying at times. There are certain themes that I personally do not agree with, and there are some repeating words/phrases, but this story is such a beautiful combination of ancient mythology and modern life that it takes no effort to look past the imperfections.
Perfect for anyone who is twelve and older who loves a thrill and a blend of the world’s mythology made one, I highly recommend “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel.” It is an adventure made immortal by words, and one that you will never forget.
