Cornered:15 Stories of Bullying and Defiance is an intense book full of short stories about bullying.

This book is written by fifteen different young adult authors. The forward is written by Chris Crutcher, an author and adolescent psychologist.

Cornered really touches the heart. Bullying is still an all too common issue today in schools, on the internet and at home. The book really makes you think about the experience of being bullied. Bullying can happen to anyone, and it can be social, emotional, physical, psychological or sexual. Cornered takes you inside the bully, the followers and the victims. It can be gut wrenching at times. The book also talks about suicide and the role of parents and teachers.

It is difficult to read the stories in one sitting. Some are very rough, with a lot of emotion and some intense physical violence. Cornered gives a good message about anti-bullying and gives you a lot of things to talk about with parents, friends and teachers.

Physical violence and discussions about suicide probably make Cornered best for kids 12 and older. Since most schools have zero tolerance policies about bullying, this book would be good for school libraries and to use as a teaching tool.

Even though Cornered is fiction, the anti-bullying message is very clear. Bullying is not okay in any way, shape or form. If you are being bullied you need to tell a trusting adult right away. If you see bullying taking place, you need to tell a trusting adult right away and help the victim.

Note: The copy I received was titled Cornered: 15 Stories of Bullying and Defiance. I have since noticed other books are titled Cornered 14. I haven’t found out the reason for the difference.
