Today we went to the library. They have 2,236,686 books in the library, and it is open a whopping 856 hours weekly!

Today we went to the library. They have 2,236,686 books in the library, and it is open a whopping 856 hours weekly!
The library reserves books for people; they also have a self check-out. While there, we learned about the technology that organizes the books. It is a big machine that scans the books and puts them where they belong. We also saw a book drop that is outside, so if you’re dropping off a book you can do it outside.
They have enough books to serve 3 books for every person who has a library card. They have a computer lab where you can play games or look stuff up. They have 410 people that work at the library. They have a computer classroom. They donate many books to schools.
The library is governed by 8 people chosen by the mayor himself. They have books for kids, teens, parents, teachers, in Spanish and for care givers. They also have many different genres. There are 455,302 library card holders. They have 39,903 summer reading participants. The library is only open 4 days a week. There is a 2.4 million dollar reduction for 2013. They are committed to work with the mayor to find a long term sustainable funding solution. That is what we saw and learned about at the Denver library today.
