Because of Shoe and Other Dog Stories is a collection of dog stories by various popular children’s authors. Some of the stories were wonderful – others were not.

Because of Shoe and Other Dog Stories is a collection of dog stories by various popular children’s authors. Some of the stories were wonderful – others were not.
Because of Shoe, written by Pam Munoz Ryan the author of Esperanza Rising, was one of the better stories. “Shoe” is a German shepherd who steals her family’s shoes and carries them around pretending they are her puppies. This is an amusing story that any owner of a quirky pet would enjoy.
My favorite story was Dognapper by Wendy Orr who also wrote Nim’s Island. Poodles are rapidly disappearing so Max – a black wiener dog – goes on the search for the culprit after his poodle best friend – Pippa – is stolen. The ending made me laugh!
A story I didn’t like as well was Things People Can’t See by Matt de la Pena – the author of several young adult novels. Chico doesn’t fit in well at his new because he is from the poor side of the freeway. He gets into fights and he is blamed for everyone else’s behavior. But when his dog Peanut returns by himself from fifty miles away things start to improve. There is a funny part where Peanut is mistaken for a wolf. I didn’t like the violence in this story. It might be written for kids older than twelve.
Science Fair, written by Mark Teague, was a strange story about a genius boy who really wants to win the science fair and creates a new dog/mouse with mouse and dog DNA.
Overall, Because of Shoe and Other Dog Stories is a mixed bag. Since all the stories are written by different authors some of the stories have great word choice and a lot of action while others are not as well written. A good thing about all the stories being written by different authors is there seems to be a story for everyone. I would recommend this book for dog lovers. I have cats, but I still enjoyed most of the stories.
