I could hear the loud music as I walked toward 1rst Avenue on Monroe Street in Cherry Creek. Tents, games, bouncy castles, a rock climbing wall and food and drink stations filled the space between sidewalks. Kids of all ages drug their parents as quickly as they could to get to the carnival. This was a milestone in the community worthy of a celebration. The Young Americans Bank is 25 years old! Bill Daniels would be proud of such an accomplishment.
The founder, Bill Daniels had a vision of creating an atmosphere where finances weren’t so scary. He wanted kids from 0 to 21 to have the opportunity to learn financial responsibility in a fun, safe and interesting environment. Rich Martinez, President and CEO, shares that vision. “We want to continue to reach more and Young Americans and teach age appropriate lessons about how to manage money.” The Young American’s Bank provides the same services and products as other banks except no adults allowed. This is a perfect system for kids to learn and under stand how a bank works. “No, I’ve never banked here”, Rich told me. “I’m too old."
Young Ameritowne and International Towne hosts over 400 schools from all over Colorado and parts of Wyoming to participate in a working town which opens their eyes to the inner workings of a stable eco system. The bank also supports and educates youth entrepreneurs who have big plans to be in business providing products or services and how to keep that business moving forward. Young Americans Bank also has Summer Camp programs where 2nd through 7th graders can sign up for week long sessions covering many money related topics. All of these programs were developed by the banks own staff.
But today was not a day of learning. It was a day of reflection on where they started, the path they have traveled and where they are going. It was a day to say Thank You to all the young bank account owners and share in a great community event.
Congratulations on 25 years of providing financial education and services to the next generation of spenders, investors and account holders! Here’s to many, many more!! This was a truly wonderful celebration.
