Mount Evans is a great place to explore nature. It has the highest paved road in the U. S. and there are some hiking trails to stop at on the way to the top that make you feel like you’re in a dream.
To start off, the wildlife is going to be a major part of your trip. If you stop by Summit Lake on the way to the top of the mountain and walk a short distance on the trail you will begin to see rocky mountain bighorn sheep. Their curved horns make them look tough and invincible. A fun fact about the sheep is that they have little suction cups on their hooves that make it easier for them to climb on rocks. You might see rocky mountain goats too. Also, on the top of the mountain stop by the Crest House (an old burned down restaurant.) If you get lucky there are going to be a bunch of rocky mountain goats and some sheep. The goats are really hairy! You will probably see their fur everywhere because they rub their backs on things to get rid of their fur.
Before I forget, on your way up or on your way down the mountain, stop by the Bristlecone Pine Tree Center. Here you will learn about the unusual Bristlecone Pines. They have twisted trunks which make them look cartoon like. You may also walk on a path through the pines.
Ultimately, while driving up Mount Evans there are some places you might want to stop by so you can get to know nature better.
