From amidst the sweat and cheering of the last stage of the 2012 USA Men's Pro Cycling Challenge emerged one winner. Christian Vande Velde of team Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda. But most the citizens of Boulder were more interested in stage 6, the Golden to Boulder race on Saturday than Denver's time trial. After a LONG day of riding, around 100 sweat-soaked riders zoomed through downtown Boulder and up Flagstaff to a finish line nestled among pine trees. The winner? Rory Sutherland of team UnitedHealthcare. And he wasn't the only one beaming on Saturday. Every single person I saw at the festivities downtown Boulder had a smile on their face!
Whether it was the twenty-thousand or so fans crowded on to Flagstaff, or the chubby toddlers toddling around on a push-bikes course, everyone was having a great time. Even if you weren't a die-hard cycling fan, you could find a way to join in with the general excitement of the day. One of the coolest thing I saw (besides the cycling) was some acrobats from the Orphan Circus performing. Some of them couldn't be much older than I am! They were wearing bike jerseys to show their support.
A festival can't be a festival without some crazy rides! One awesome ride I saw was called WOW bubbles. In this ride, you climb into a giant clear plastic bubble. Then you get tossed into a inflatable pool with a bunch of other bubbles and you get to bump into each other and splash around without once getting wet!
As you can see, a great time was had by all! Thousands flocked to Boulder on Saturday to glimpse the riders, enjoy the activities, and sample the delicious food. What better way to bring the community together than to have a bike race zoom right through downtown Boulder?
