Generations of Ah, Ah, Ahs Remember the Count

The voice of the Count Von Count passed away last Thursday, August 23, 2012 at his home in Massachusetts. Most kids would say that it’s not really that important, but then they don’t truly know the impact that Jerry Nelson has left on generations of Sesame Street lovers.

What people don’t realize is that Sesame Street lives on. You see many elementary and middle school students wearing shirts of their favorite characters. I bet that you’ve seen someone with a Cookie Monster hat or shirt on. While Sesame Street may be a show that teaches kids their ABC’s and 1 (ah, ah, ah,), 2 (ah, ah, ah,), 3s (ah, ah, ah,), even adults enjoy Sesame Street, including Jeff Shoup.

Jeff Shoup works for NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. Jeff works on land for a few years, and sea for a few years, flipping back and forth. But during his land time, he might be called out to sea. For the past few weeks, he’s been on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean. He keeps in touch with his wife, Megan, and 2-year-old daughter, Abby by posting pictures of him… and Murrey, another Sesame Street character.

His daughter, Abby, loves Sesame Street and the Count. I asked her, “What does the Count say?”

Her reply? “Ah, ah, ah,” she says with a big grin on her face.

Jerry Nelson and Sesame Street brought smiles to faces of all ages, not just two-year-olds. The lasting impact that the Count had will not be forgotten so easily as just saying 1,2,3.
