The Magician’s Apprentice by Kate Banks is a really great- but confusing- story. I loved this book because all of the characters are so well described it seems like they are real.

The Magician’s apprentice is about a kid named Baz that travels around the world in search of his destiny. He starts off with a man that has no name. That stranger sells him to a man who apprentices him to be a weaver. Baz’s master takes him to a place where he would weave all day, with very little food. The Master carries his whip with him wherever he goes, and whips Baz when he slows down or stops. When Baz realizes his Master’s cruelty, it is too late. He can’t run. Can’t hide.
After a series of unfortunate events- where Baz shoots a little dog named Blink- Baz’s Master realizes he can’t take care of Baz anymore, so the Master takes Baz to the marketplace and almost sells him to the Army.  In no time, Baz is apprenticed to be a Magician.
Then, Baz and a mysterious man travel over deserts, mountains, rivers- to find Baz’s destiny.
The Magician’s Apprentice is a good sized book-213 pages – and is a novel that I could not put down. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone under 10 or 11, because the beginning is pretty confusing and the way that the characters speak is not the way that we talk now.
