Halloween is coming soon! Children are getting ready to get in their costumes to go trick or treating. Halloween, also known as “All Hallows eve,” is when the spirits of the dead can return to earth. Halloween started about 2,000 years ago in Ireland. A group of people believed in a god named Samhain, who was the god of dead and darkness. They picked October 31 for their celebration, where the spirits could come back and visit with living relatives. Since then, kids have celebrated by dressing up, knocking on doors, and getting lots of candy.
I have noticed lots of Halloween themed stores that seem to open around Halloween and I thought it would be good to learn more. I interviewed Jodie, a manager of a Halloween store down the street from my house that sells Halloween costumes, make-up, and other Halloween accessories. Jodie told me her store is a “business in a box.” That means her store opens once a truck shows up and drops off the items in early September. When Halloween is over, the employees put all the left over items back in a truck that goes to back to a big warehouse to be stored until next year. Her store is “seasonal” and is open only from mid September to early November and uses store locations that are empty.
In speaking with Jodie, the most popular costumes this year for girls are Princesses and Monster High clothes. For boys, they are Star Wars and Ninjas. Adult’s favorites are Super Heroes while pets are Angry Birds. Make sure you visit your local Halloween store and get ready for Halloween.
