Do you live in Colorado? Do you like to help charities? Then, I have a day for you! December 4th is Colorado Gives Day! It is 24 hours to give where you live.

Colorado Gives Day is a day where people can donate money to all approved and participating Colorado charities. Starting at midnight on December 4th, donors can go to www.givingfirst.org to make a donation to their favorite non-profit. Colorado Gives Day ends at 11:59p.m. on the 4th-it really is 24 hours to give where you live!

This is the third year for Colorado Gives Day. The first year was in 2010 and $8.4 million was raised for CO Charities. In 2011 $12.8 million was raised on Colorado Gives Day. The goal of Community First Foundation, who started this day after seeing it be so successful in other states like TX and MN, was $1 million for the first year. “People thought we were crazy to think we would raise that much money for charities in one day. ” remarked Dana Rinderknecht, Manager of Online Giving with Community First Foundation. When they raised $7.4 million more than their goal, they were really surprised and happy. “Coloradans are very generous people!” said Rinderknecht.

I asked Rinderknecht how kids can donate on Colorado Gives Day. She recommended sitting down with your parents and talking about how much money you would want to donate to a charity. Then you should talk about the different types of charities there are, such as ones that help animals, children, women, homeless people, veterans and disaster relief ones. Each non-profit has a profile page on www.givingfirst.org and they can tell you about what they do and how they can help people. It’s an online donation made with a credit card, so that’s why you need to sit down with your parents.

Instead of spending your allowance on a pair of earrings or a baseball hat this month, why don’t you pick your favorite charity to help them out! Even $10 can make a huge difference to the over 1200 charities participating in Colorado Gives Day this year!

You can find out more about these 1200 non-profits at www.givingfirst.org. “We have a page dedicated to Colorado Gives Day and you can go on to learn about all of the different non-profits. You can search by charity type or by zip code so you can find one right in your area. ” said Rinderknecht.

What’s neat about Colorado Gives Day is that 100% of your money will go to the charities! “On Colorado Gives Day every donation will get a boost from the First Bank incentive fund. Every dollar that is donated will get a portion of the $300,000 incentive fund. We have a great corporate partner in First Bank. ” said Rinderknecht.

Today is Colorado Gives Day, so go make a difference for our state!
