“Real Mermaids Don’t Need High Heels” by Hélène Boudreau is a great novel that makes me want to be watching this myself! Although this is an amazing book, you might want to read the rest of the books before this one. I had read the rest of the “Real Mermaids” series before this one, so I knew what was going on. Overall, this was a great book to read and enjoy.
I loved the way that Hélène kept the suspense going until the very end, where I was surprised at what happened.
The “Real Mermaids” series is about a fourteen-year-old girl that just wants her life to be normal. When she finds out that she is a mermaid, she knows that that isn’t going to happen. Jade is still confused about her mom drowning, especially is she was a mermaid. How did Jade’s mom drown when she could breathe underwater?
After her fourteenth birthday party, the days and months have slowly ticked by. But it is September again and Jade is finally in high school!
This is an exciting time for Jade. Her world seems endlessly perfect- until the Mermish Council decides to take all of the Webbed Ones (mermaids that have moved from water to land) back into the ocean to keep a secret that can never be revealed. Jade has finally gotten back together with everyone she loves, and now she has to let go of them. Bridget, “Tanti Natasha”, Luke, and Serena have to go back to the ocean no matter what.
The Mermish Council decides to take them back by the hypnotizing sound of the bell from the shipwreck of Fortune’s Folly. Jade’s dad has a plan to block the sound of the bell, but it isn’t enough.
Will Jade have to let go of almost everything she loves?
I loved this book because it can relate to real life, even if it can’t happen for real. I would recommend this novel for ages 11 and under, because of some things that younger kids wouldn’t understand.
