Jane Yolen is truly an author extraordinaire! She's written over 320 books during her career. And, she doesn't write just one genre, oh no. Ms. Yolen has written picture books, fairy tales, young adult fiction, children's books, long essays, graphic novels, nonfiction: the list is endless. But her very favorite thing to write is simple but beautiful…poetry.

But her newest book, a novel for young adults, is actually a fairy tale.  Curse of the Thirteenth Fey  The true tale of Sleeping Beauty, is a wonderfully written story about a 13 year old Fey fairy named Gorse. Her family, the Shouting Fey, are bid to give a newly born princess gifts. But Gorse becomes dreadfully sick on the day of the blessing. As she rushes to the palace, already late, something awful happens. Now Gorse has put her entire family in danger of bursting into a thousand stars, which is what happens when a Shouting Fey disobeys a bidding. Can she, along with a snooty prince, his suspiciously loyal henchman, and a heard of large hairy McGargles, save her family? As they work tirelessly, Gorse uncovers secrets that place everyone in an even more dire situation then they first believed.

Curse of the Thirteenth Fey isn't the only book Yolen has been working on recently. In fact, she usually works on six or seven at the same time! She finds it restful. She might work on a novel, a nonfiction project, a picture book, and a poetry book at the same time! Yolen says,

"You don't mix them up because each book has its own voice, its own problems, and its own solutions."

Yolen's first book was sold on her 22nd birthday. It was a nonfiction book on women pirates. 320 books later, she's an international sensation! As Yolen herself puts it,

"After the first book, I wanted to write more. I was bitten by the book bug!" Before becoming an author, Yolen was pursuing journalism like her father. It turns out, she wasn't very good at it!

"I would just make up stuff!" She admits. Well, switching to books was definitely a good choice for all of us readers. Yolen's books are well-written, well-researched, and really entertaining! No matter if you’re an adult, a toddler, or somewhere in between, everyone can appreciate Yolen's wonderful talent with words!
