At the stock show Sunday the day was packed with alpaca events of all kinds. The craziest event was the costume contest. The young owners of the alpacas dressed up with the alpaca in coordinating costumes such as skiers, Mariachi dancers, pirates, beach bums, gardeners, and travelers. I talked to the Mariachi dancer about what it is like to be in this competition. Ellie Swanson says it is exciting and that it is “sort of” difficult to take care of the alpaca but “worth it.” Ellie’s alpaca wore jeans and a colorful Mexican blanket topped off with a sombrero. Ellie wore a bright Mexican style dress. The owners in this competition were very young – most under 10.
A competitor in the older division was dressed like a gardener with a garden tools attached to the alpaca. I asked if it was hard to dress an alpaca. She replied, “at first, but then you and the alpaca get used to it.” The dressed alpacas did seem very calm.
The competition was entertaining to watch! I was surprised to see a costume contest when the program said just alpaca show. Check out the daily stock show schedule for upcoming irregular events. Keep in mind the fun events might be part of a regular show. Expect the unexpected!
