Gene is a normal human. He goes to school, swims, and has an everyday life. But there’s a catch. He’s surrounded by vampires who are hungry for heper, slang for human, blood. The world had been taken over by vampires and there were a few humans pretending to be vampires out in the society. Life could not get any worse with worrying about getting sniffed out from body odor, sweating, and even laughing, but it does. Gene wins the lottery to go to the Heper Hunt,  where he has to hunt down his own kind, kill them and suck their blood like a normal vampire against other competitors.

Gene continues to the Heper Hunt without his deodorant leaving him vulnerable to the hunters sniffing him out. The whole time all of the other competitors think they smell heper in the institute and almost sniff him out. With the hunters attacking the dome where the hepers are kept, Gene and an unlikely ally work together to save the hepers and get to the safety of the mountain range in the distance.

This book would appeal to readers of about 12+ because of violent, sometimes scary content.  Overall, this book will leave the reader itching for more, and they won’t want to put it down until they figure out what happens around the next bend. This is the first book in the series and there is son to be a second called The Prey.
