A couple of days ago, 245 kids participated in the Colorado State Spelling Bee, which was held at the Colorado Convention Center. These kids all had butterflies in their stomachs as they signed in and departed in to one of the Mile High Ballrooms where the 50-word written spelling test took place. You may be thinking, “Oh, it’s just a spelling test,” but this was no easy task. With words such as “ektistics,” “Bauhaus,” “syntrophism,” and “ogival,” only 40 spellers made it into the oral competition. The oral contest lasted over five hours, where only one speller made it into the nationals. 205 cheerless kids went home empty-handed. But, the state Spelling Bee was a great experience for all of the participants.
