Wildwood, an intriguing tale, is a phenomenal story. It is about a young girl named Prue, who lives in Portland, bordering the Impassable Wilderness, also known, by the inhabitants, as Wildwood. She takes her little brother, Mac, to the park one day, where something unimaginable happens. Crows kidnap him!
Determined to save her brother, Prue sets off to go into the Impassable Wilderness. Before she gets in, though, Curtis stops her. He’s a friend from school. Once in Wildwood, though, the children are shocked when they learn of a horrific evil brewing, all centered around Mac and Prue. Nonetheless, the two of them, together, brave the Impassable Wilderness, and, even when something happens, find a way back to each other.
The children are also regarded with suspicion by the inhabitants, human and animal, for being from the Outside. Anywhere besides the Wood is considered the Outside, and a magical wall, called the Periphery Bind, keeps everyone who’s not from Wildwood out. Could the magic be broken?
This enticing tale is by Colin Meloy. I would recommend this four-star book to kids fourth grade through seventh grade because it is a long book, almost 600 pages, but it is an inspiring tale of a simple city girl faced with a complicated wilderness issue. I think kids throughout that age would find the novel interesting.
