It's baseball season! And in Colorado this means a great opportunity for elementary school students who are in choir. Ok, I know what you're thinking, say what? what would baseball have to do with choir? Well, some very lucky elementary schools who have a choir, and have submitted an audio tape of them singing the National Anthem can get chosen to sing the National Anthem at a Colorado Rockies game! In fact, a couple years back in 2011, my school choir group was chosen to sing the National Anthem and I was apart of it!
To begin with, every Tuesday after school my choir group and I would rehearse singing the National Anthem until it was time to record it and send it off to the Colorado Rockies. After anticipating a few weeks, we got a callback and were informed that we were chosen to sing at a Colorado Rockies game on 4/18/11 VS. the San Francisco Giants! The whole group was overwhelmed with excitement! But then there was so much to do! More rehearsals, what to wear, coordinating car rides, and what time everything was supposed to be. It all came together in the end and was a moment that no one would soon forget.
Being out on Coors Field, walking on the same grass where the professional ball players are, was so incredible! We even saw some of them warming up! As we walked to our "stage" out on the field, I looked at some of the people in the stands and saw some of my fellow classmates from school! When we got to our spot on the field, we had to wait a few minutes to make sure the sound systems were working. Then finally they announced our school name, and I felt so proud to be there. My heart started beating really fast because my choir teacher had her arms ready to start, so that meant it was time for us to sing. I kept my eyes on my choir teacher the whole time, even though it felt like everybody in the stands was looking at me. After we sang there was a huge, thunderous round of applause. After we exited the field, we went back with our families and they told me that we were on the jumbotron the whole time!
If you are in your school choir group and get the chance to do this, you should not pass it up! You get to feel so proud of yourself because you accomplished something that not everyone can do. Also, I've never heard of any other place/state that does this, so it makes this even more special! It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that is very fun, and if you love to sing, this'll help you get to do what you love!
On Monday, April 22nd, Parr, Witt and Sheridan Green Elementaries will be singing the National Anthem at a 6:40 game against the Atlanta Braves. Come support your fellow elementary school students at this exciting event!
