I love to draw and want to learn how improve my skills and I know that many others would like to know the secrets of drawing too.

I love to draw and want to learn how improve my skills and I know that many others would like to know the secrets of drawing too. That is why I interviewed Garegin Azizyan (Garaz), a professional Armenian artist.
I asked Garegin what he would recommend to a child that wanted to learn how to draw. He told me to always have a pencil near you, to never stop drawing, and to draw everything and everywhere. Kids should pay close attention to shapes, colors and their shades because everything around us contains them.

You have to start drawing with a pencil because if your sketch doesn’t look good, it won’t look good with paint. Adding color to your picture is the second thing. Every person sees colors differently. Some people are even color blind. So you cannot teach people how to color.  Ideally you have to find an Art Studio and take lessons there, but if you can’t you can use books or the Internet. The main thing in drawing is to be persistent and try, try again. The more you practice, the better you become.

We also talked about the everyday life of an artist. Garegin always thinks about what to draw.  He looks for ideas for his pictures all the time. An artist doesn’t have any weekends to relax and stop drawing, but he doesn’t have any work schedules either. Sometimes Garegin starts a picture early in the morning and finishes late at night.

Being an artist is not easy work and doesn’t always mean big money. Only other people can judge your art and decide if it is worth money. To sell their art, artists should participate in exhibits and use any opportunity to show their work.

Interviewing Garegin Azizyan was a pleasure. At the end he told me that kids shouldn’t be afraid of learning to draw. Even if you don’t become a professional artist you will have one of the best hobbies for the rest of your life. Our world is beautiful and your drawing will depict the unique way you see it.
