Thor Heyerdahl lived on and studied the islands of Polynesia for 10 years. All should have been good, but it wasn’t.

A nagging question kept pulling the back of his shirt: how did the people of Polynesia get there? After questioning the Polynesians, he got only one answer: the great god Tiki lead them west into the setting sun.

Heyerdahl researched the food chain and came up with a variety of pineapple that existed in both South America and Polynesia, so he made a theory that the Polynesians came from the east, contradictory to what the scholars in the 1940s believed. Heyerdahl got together a crew consisting of a refrigerator salesman, a military intelligence expert, an ethnographer, a radio operator, a childhood friend and himself to prove his theory.

They built a balsa wood raft with no modern materials. In 1947, they sailed out to sea, facing many dangers: sharks, drowning, storms, being lost at sea, and even a malestrom!

The movie leaves out why Heyerdahl and his friends named the raft “Kon-Tiki.” Heyerdahl had also researched the myths of Polynesia and Peru. One of the Incan gods was named Kon-Tiki and the Polynesian god was Tiki.

“Kon-Tiki” is wonderfully crafted and I recommend it to adventurers all ages. All the scenes in the movie are vividly life-like, especially the sound. When the scenes are in the middle of a storm, you can hear everything as if you were actually there, in the middle of the thundering weather, so it might not be suitable for younger audiences.

Science, history and courage on a raft adrift at sea, this movie has something for everybody!

People who have motion sickness may want to exercise caution while watching this 2 hour long PG-13 movie.
