1. What inspired the Odd Squad series? Personal experience?

I wasn't freakishly short in middle school like Nick, but I was an outsider because my family moved a lot (but I always found them again). I went to ten different schools in 17 years. So, I know what it feels like to be the new kid, to be picked on, etc. I wanted to write a fun book that kids could relate to and have a small message.

2. What/who first got you interested in writing and art? How old were you?

I was in college when I started writing and drawing. I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do with my life and being a cartoonist seemed like a good way to postpone the decision.

3. What is your best advice for kids wanting to be a cartoonist or artist?

Draw. Draw. Draw. Write. Write. Write. Just do it. Then pay attention to what people like about your work. Then do more of THAT. It's not hard, it's just takes time and practice to get good. The most important part is to listen to your audience. They're always right. Even when they're wrong.

4. How many Odd Squad adventures can we expect in the future?

I just finished the second and have started on the third. I'll do as many as they'll let me do (or as many as the readers want).

5. I love the characters in the Odd Squad, they all have very
interesting and unique personas. Were they inspired by real people?

Bits and pieces from real people, but they're all mostly just made up. I was a lot like Nick. Not so short, but I had a single working mom, close to grandparents, kinda nerdy.

6. What were your favorite comics, books, and artists as a kid and growing up?

I was a big Peanuts fan when I was Nick's age. Later, Doonesbury was a big influence.

7. Is there anything else you would like the Colorado Kids readers to
know about you, your work, or anything else?

If you're like me and you like the pants-optional life then being a cartoonist/writer/artist may be for you. Just remember that a pants-optional life is best lived indoors.
