Sand in the City, the premiere sand sculpting contest and festival, made its Arvada debut June 14 and 15 right outside of the Arvada Center.

This awesome event provided fun for the whole family. From a giant kids sandbox to vendors and even live music, it was near impossible to be bored!

The professional sand sculptors only work with each team a bit at a time, because they have to go to all of the teams. The team members got training on sand sculpting and then set to work.

On the first day, ten teams compiled of employees from local businesses, clubs, and charities set out to build sand sculptures, which would be judged nine hours later. The mayor of Arvada was only one of the members of the judging team, who had a tough decision picking the winner between a variety of amazing sculptures, such as Despicable Me minions, Veggie Tales characters with the founder of King Soopers, and a forest full of animals.

The general public could come with free admission from 4-8 on Friday to watch the teams work (plus get a sneak peek at the festivities!) and on Saturday from 10-6 to enjoy all the music, vendors, and sand.

The founder, Bert Adams, has made this fundraiser for non-profits a worldwide success. He's been a professional sand sculptor since 1996, when he started Sand in the City.

"Sand in the City suddenly became the vehicle for me to become professional," he said of his 17-year career in the sand.

Adams was inspired to become a sand sculptor when he was taken to the freedom of the beach's sand versus the sand of his mother's flower bed. "You have a good time with the sand. And I think that's just really what it is. It's just that it's a natural, fun material that everyone likes to play with," he stated.

Arvada's first annual Sand in the City was a blast! A great event, Sand in the City is a great summertime activity for everybody!
