After saving his three adopted daughters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher) from Vector in the first movie of Despicable Me, Gru (Steve Carell) is no longer a villain and makes jams for a living. At the beginning of the movie, it is shown that Gru is a cheerful, colorful, and happy dad.
A short while later, Gru and two of his minions are kidnapped by Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig, who also played the voice of Miss Hattie), an Anti-Villain League Agent, and taken to the underwater Anti-Villain League (AVL) Headquarters. They ask Gru to become a spy in order to track down a new super-villain who has stolen a research laboratory and a chemical compound that can transform “good” people into killing machines who are invincible. AVL chooses Gru for that certain assignment because he is a former villain and knows how and what a villain thinks like, but, Gru declines, saying that he has other responsibilities now.
When Gru returns, Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand) admits that he misses being evil and is going to be working for another villain and leaves Gru and his minions. Gru then agrees to work for AVL and works undercover in a mall as a cupcake shop owner since the chemical has been traced to the mall. Lucy is Gru’s partner in this task situation. He suspects a restaurant owner named Eduardo Perez (Benjamin Bratt) to be a previously successful super-villain, called El Macho, who supposedly died in an accident with an active volcano. When Gru confirms his evidence and shows it to AVL, they seem to think otherwise.
The first movie portrays how Gru progresses from a villain to a caring dad. Despicable Me 2 introduces a new sense of drama as well as action and passion. There are many moments in the movie where there are hilarious scenes and in which most of them involve Gru’s kids. In this movie, Gru becomes more attached to his kids and realizes their needs more often than his. The end of the movie is romantic, but not so much that the movie is affected.
If you have seen the first movie and liked it, Despicable Me 2 is definitely a must-see. The 3-D effect in the movie implied a lot of emotion and feeling because it felt as if you were actually standing in the movie what with all the actions.
