Fire men risk their lives helping put out fires and saving our lives. Roy Gelbhaus works at the fire fighters museum. He is a retired fire fighter and a very knowledgeable guy. He is the one that told us this info. Some of the things we learned were: Fire fighters long ago used old logs to make fire equipment that transferred water to help fight fires.
Another thing fire fighters used to use were fire pumpers. Fire pumpers were pumped by men to get water to come through a well into the fire hose. The only problem with this was that it takes many men to pump this because most men got tired after about a minute and another person would jump in and keep pumping. Just think how many men it would take to put out a whole fire with this method!
Roy also taught us that to rescue someone very high you have to use a special ladder that isn’t very safe. Also you have to get the person inside the building to come down the ladder with the fire fighter! Wow, what a dangerous job.
Fire fighters and engineers have worked to improve and fix these dangerous pieces of equipment and now we have more safe, more improved, fire equipment. Truly, fire fighters are some of the bravest men on earth.
