When 14 year old Duncan (Liam James), his mom Pam (Toni Collette), his mom’s verbally abusive boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell), and Trent’s daughter Steph (Zoe Levin) go on a road trip to Trent’s beach house, Duncan has no idea what he’s in for.
This movie is perfect for teens because Duncan learns to go out and enjoy life, which is a great life lesson we can take from it. Steve Carell is absolutely convincing in his evil step-father role, and you cant help but fall in love with sweet Duncan.
Despite his awkwardness, he meets Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb) who didn’t come off as the nicest person, but as the movie goes on their relationship gets better because their lives are so similar
It was funny to see a nerdy white guy try to do hip hop dance. . I also loved how this is so genuine that it doesn’t look staged or anything! It felt like you could’ve been following one of your friends on their vacation! (That’s how real this was!) The great acting just came to life and reminded me of people I knew! These things make it the perfect coming of age movie. I have never seen a movie that blew me out of the water that makes me want to go see it again in the theatre with my friends! Perfect summer movie, better than anything you’ll see. It is an absolute must that’ll make you want to see it again!
It is not all fun and games though. Duncan also deals with his parents’ friends who are constantly drunk, do drugs, and leave Duncan by himself to clean up the place..
To escape the misery, he finds an old pink bike which is his ride to freedom. When Duncan stops at a pizza joint he meets the one of a kind Owen (Sam Rockwell). The two instantly hit it off. Owen happens to own the local water park, and although he is a bit of a slacker, he becomes the one person that truly accepts and encourages Duncan in all aspects of his life. Duncan finds great happiness and refuge at the water park where he even becomes employee of month, and his amateur dance moves earning him the nickname “Pop & Lock.” While all this is happening, Duncan gets closer to Susanna and the turmoil at home gets worse and worse.
This is a great coming of age movie that you have got to see to find out just what is “the way way back?”
