Set in futuristic America, Monument 14 written by Emmy Laybourne is a frightening thriller packed with suspense and unique characters.

This novel tells the story of Dean and thirteen other kids who must take refuge in a chain superstore (similar to a Target or Costco) in order to survive. Being trapped in a store with everything you could ever want sounds like every child's dream doesn’t it? The only problem is outside a number of disasters occur starting with a monster hailstorm then a chemical weapons spill later on. These catastrophes seemingly tear the kids world apart. Their only option for safety is to remain in the store.

The characters in this book were very complex. Each displayed a wide variety of traits as well as emotions throughout the writing. It was interesting reading how their interactions with each other changed as the story progressed. I wouldn’t recommend this novel to anybody below the age of twelve because of some crude language, violence, drug and alcohol use, and sexual scenes. Most of the language in this book was intense and sad. It needed some more comic relief. Despite these attributes, this book was pretty good. I look forward to reading the sequel Sky On Fire.
