The Creature From the Seventh Grade Sink or Swim by Bob Balaban is a story about 12 year old Charlie Drinkwater.
The Creature From the Seventh Grade Sink or Swim by Bob Balaban is a story about 12 year old Charlie Drinkwater. He is nerdy, not athletic at all, and a huge mutant 8 ½ foot dinosaur. He has a problem on his hands, and it is up to him and his only two friends, Sam and Lucille, to solve it before things get worse.
There is a thief in the town of Decatur, Illinois, and not only are the culprits suffering, but so is innocent Charlie. Someone is stealing massive portions of food, and when you are a dinosaur that has an appetite of a blue whale, people just assume it is Charlie. But it’s not. The mean principal of Charlie’s school (Stevenson Middle School, grades five through eight) decides he needs to be punished for his “crime” and makes him join the swim team. The only problem with that, though, is that he is terrified of swimming. He has many other fears, including “…eating liver, the most frightening food on the planet except for maybe rhubarb, the other most frightening food on the planet except for maybe tapioca pudding, which is like eating mucus with fish eyes in it only worse.” Charlie and his friends have to look for clues and solve who really is the thief before Charlie gets punished even more!
Will Charlie and his friends solve the crime or will Charlie have to do swim team for the rest of his years at Stevenson Middle School? Read this book to find out. I would give this book 4 out of 5 punishments because it was very interesting and I enjoyed reading it, but I did get kind of confused at the end. I think that many ages would enjoy this book because it was an easy read for me and I feel my 9 year old sister would as well. You can buy this book for about $10.
