Peter and the Starcatcher, the prequel to Peter Pan, is a very fun and humorous Broadway show. I got to see it at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and found it very entertaining. I would definitely recommend it for kids who are mature and would be able to handle some grownup jokes. The play is recommended for kids ten and up but is filled with adult humor that would maybe go straight over a ten year old’s heads. Compared to the book, there were many added parts to make it more entertaining for adults.
One thing that I thought was very cool was their use of props and scenery. In the whole play there were only two backdrops, however it seemed like more with the use of lighting. The props were also very cool because they used items like a rope for waves and stairs. A glove was used to make a bird.
If you have read the book and want to see the play I would encourage you to do so. However, don’t be disappointed because there are some differences. They did leave some of the characters out like the orphans. I was a little disappointed about that because I thought they could add a couple more boys considering how many people they had. Also, some of the ways the story falls out are a little different. Even with those differences it didn’t make a huge impact on my overall feeling of the show.
You should definitely go see this play. It moves very quickly so you are entertained the whole time. I was always on the edge of my seat even when I have read the book. The actors were always full of energy and humor. I think the funniest character was Black Stache, Captain Hook before his hook. If you want to go see this show it is at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House until September first. I would definitely recommend this show if you like Peter Pan.
