“Battle Magic” by Tamora Pierce is a suspenseful, well-written fantasy adventure.

Midway through their stay at the mystic country of Gyongxe, mages Briar, Rosethorn, and Evvy receive the irresistible offer to visit the emperor of Yanjing's famed gardens. But before they leave Yanjing, a new friend repays them for a favor by alerting them of the emperor's plans to invade Gyongxe. With no time to spare, they rush back, but war will push their magic (and their friendships) to the limit.

When I read this book, I didn't know that it was a companion novel to several of Tamora Pierce's other books, including the Circle of Magic and Circle Opens quartets. However, you don't need to have read those books to understand and enjoy this book, as there are few parts where background is needed. But be warned, there are some spoilers in this book.

Battle Magic starts out very, very slow. I wouldn't recommend reading just a few chapters to see if you like it, because it only starts to hook you after they leave Yanjing.

Overall, I'd give it a 3 ½ stars out of 5. I'd recommend it to young adults ages 12 and up because of mild violence, and some mature implications.
