Coming into this book, Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay, I expected it to be like your average fairy tale story. However, it was the complete opposite.
Coming into this book, Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay, I expected it to be like your average fairy tale story. However, it was the complete opposite. This book is about a beast named Gem who is held captive in the city of Yuan and a beauty named Iras who was not beautiful at all; in fact, she has some monstrous features. Gem fights to keep his people, the Monstrous, from starvation. Since Iras has royal blood, she is raised to be a human sacrifice, to keep the city of Yuan safe from the Monstrous and other threatening things, such as the harsh weathers.
As queen, Iras tries to help the Monstrous, but the people of Yuan won’t allow it. After she captured Gem for trying to steal the magic roses of Yuan, she begins to have feelings for him and starts to question everything she has been told about the monstrous and begins to have her own opinion for them.
As secrets are exposed, Iras has to choose between the city of Yuan and the beast that she surprisingly comes to loves.
Although the beginning is hard to follow, it is full of descriptive imagery and great detail. As I got further into the book it began to make more sense as secrets were revealed.
I love how Stacey Jay put a dark new twist to the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast that interests modern audiences.
It was hard for me to put this book down. I kept wanting to find out what would happen next. Some parts of the story were unpredictable. More than once, I had tears running down my face with happiness or sorrow. The author used such great detail, that I felt like I was there with Iras and Gem.
Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay is now one of my favorite books because of the great descriptions, surprises, and the imagery. I would recommend it to anyone twelve to eighteen who likes an action packed love story.
