With a national candymaking contest coming up, four kids in Spring Haven have a shot at winning. But before they can go and compete in the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, they have training at the Life is Sweet candy factory, which is just brimming with sweet delicacies.

The main characters, Logan, Daisy, Philip, and Miles, each have a variety of crazy ideas and personalities that have mystery on every page. Logan is expected to win, as he is a candymaker's son, Philip is constantly dressed nice and writing in a notebook, Daisy can lift a 50-pounds of taffy as if it were a feather, and Miles is allergic to the color pink.

Each character's perspective is portrayed, giving an insight on how they each felt and reacted to the events. The well-crafted characters have an element of curiosity for readers, which just adds wild thoughts as to who will come out with the win at the end.

The Candymakers is 450 pages of suspense, detail, and fun. I'd recommend the novel for middle schoolers looking for a "sweet" read.
