Penelope is a girl who is in Elementary school. Penelope is unique, she is the only one in her class who goes nuts over art. Mr. Rodriguez is a guest who comes to Penelope’s school to tell them about an exciting opportunity. He tells the class about a volunteer art project at a senior citizen home. Penelope immediately wants to do it by herself, but a lot of other students volunteer too. The class voted her leader of the project. During the project, Penelope becomes too much of a boss, so everybody quits. With none of the others on the team to help Penelope, will the mural get finished?

Shawn K. Stout uses good details throughout the book so the reader can create a movie in their head. For example she writes, “A commuter bus speeds by, and the wind blows my ponytail clear around my head tickling my nose.” Another example, is how people talk in the book. In one section of the book, Mr. Rodriguez said, “I think it’s pretty righteous that you’re so excited about art!” Kids today can relate to the word righteous, because its a word that I hear all the time.

Penelope Crumb is a lot like kids today. She wants everybody to like her, but not everybody does. This is how the book mirrors real life. The second thing is art is her life. She would die if art never would have existed. Imagine if your favorite sport or hobby was not around!

This book is an easy read for kids fourth grade and up. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I think any girl would enjoy reading it.
