When I picked up Desmond Pucket  Monster Magic I knew it was going to be a chiller!  I felt the hebe-jeebe's when I felt the cover of Mark Tatulli's new novel. I have never felt such a weird or cool book cover before.

"Desmond Pucket Gourmet of Gore," as he calls himself, likes to be scary.  He likes everything to be frightening.  Desmond, a tween,  likes to draw terrifying monster rides that he wants to design.  Desmond got his interest in monsters when he took a cheap day to Crab Shell Pier and found an epic ride called Mountain Full of Monsters.  This is where his interest in monsters began.

At school, when Desmond pulls off scary tricks he does not take the credit as  he could get expelled by Mr. Needles (that would be bad).  Later, after school Desmond had all but perfect scary idea for his sister's slumber party! I feel bad for Desmond because everyone always laughs at him, makes fun of him and they do not understand him. That is the least of Desmond's problems, he has to do three extracurricular activities at his junior high.

Mr. Needles finds Desmond after the school's news, which was paranormal that day (busted 🙁   ).  Darn rabbits; strike one!  The strike system is what is used in baseball, if you get three strikes you are out.  If you ever had to do the strike system you probably know it stinks because the pressure is on to be good or whatever is required of you.

Next up, newspaper club. Darnit the sloppy joe story + illustrations got Desmond strike two before he even knew it or wanted. Now the pressure is really on Desmond.  Oh sloppy joes! 🙁   Desmond ran into the janitor that he said went into the meat grinder and got made into sloppy joe meat.

Desmond's next task: drama club.  If he gets strike three he is out of school before the field trip to Crab Show Pier! Last time Desmond went to Crab Show Pier when he was seven, he saw a ride that he really wanted to ride called Mountain Full of Monsters. He was too small to ride it. So he really wants to stay in school so he can go on the field trip. Will Desmond get to go to Crab Show Pier?

I think this book is great for 2nd to 5th graders, boys and girls. You should really read every page til the very end. I assure you will get a chiller out of this book like I did.
