Anytime can be a great time to get some new books for young readers! Why not get something short and sweet? “The Mystery of Meerkat Hill” (by Alexander McCall Smith, illustrations by Iain McIntosh) is a 90-page book. This book is also good if young children need books for a book club. Great for kids that love fast-paced mystery books and detectives, this is a must-have!
When a new detective named Precious Ramotswe (who I will just call Precious for the sake of time) meets two newcomers at school, she will discover a new mystery. These new children, a sister with the name of Teb and her younger brother Pontsho, are in need of a friend. Precious was quickly there to welcome them and befriend them. Can you imagine how curious Precious was to find out they had a pet meerkat? She quickly learned about this furry friend that goes by the name of Kosi, but when their family cow goes missing, there is no time to play. Precious and her new friends need all the help they can get, and luckily a clever meerkat is there to help!
After reading a story as exciting as this, kids will really have a lot to say about it! In the back of the book you can find questions to answer in a book club, things to research, and other books about curious detectives. If this is used as a book to read at home, there is something for that, too. A short recipe for fat cakes is “fresh out of the oven” in the back of the book. With book club plans, a fast-paced mystery and a recipe, who could say no to a book like this?
