The Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir is a comprehensive choral music education program that brings children together through music. The RMCC (Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir) is a vehicle for kids ages 5-18 years old to meet others that they wouldn’t normally become friends with through music and singing.
I attended RMCC’s Christmas concert on December 10th, at New Hope Baptist Church. I interviewed the director of the the choir,Lisa Cameron. Lisa believes that the choir is very diverse, inclusive, friendly, and open to the public. Lisa told me that it is the kids that motivate her to continue in the choir, not the ensemble. She loves the idea of a child meeting someone new that they never thought they would come across. The choir is also very open to parental involvement. Before the choir makes any changes they will ask parents for their opinions.
A big part of being in The Rocky Mountain Children’s Choir is taking trips. The choir takes a lot of very cool trips to many different places. The choir has performed in South Dakota, Washington DC, Iowa, Canada, Chicago etc. I also interviewed a choir members/singers on the trips the choir has taken. Cameron Hudley, 13, said that he loves taking the trips, but sometimes, the choir staff packs too much into too little time but overall they are fun and educational. He told me that there hasn’t been a trip that he hasn’t loved, his favorite was South Dakota where he got to visit Mt. Rushmore. Although they do go all around the world and experience amazing things, there is sometimes a downside, Cameron said, the younger children don’t like to be away from their parents for a week at a time.
I also interviewed other choir singers, Reily Hilbert 14, Hugh Newcumb 14, and Kamia Bradley. I asked them what their favorite part of the choir was. Reily said she loves how friendly the choir is, and how diverse it is. She thinks it’s cool how you can meet someone just like you and someone completely different than you. Hugh also said his favorite part of the choir is the people. He also loves the wide variety of songs and how the choir sometimes strays from tradition. Kamia said singing and getting better at singing, is what she likes the best. She said she likes how the choir trains the singer’s voices but doesn’t strain their voices. Kamia also said she sometimes likes the songs but the choir does sometimes sing songs in different languages and she said she likes to understand what she’s singing.
