Read “The Great Unexpected” by Sharon Creech, to find out.
When Naomi and her best friend, Lizzie start uncovering secrets about their small town, from who the “tree boy” is to the peculiar old people with peculiar stories, things start to unravel. Naomi was adopted, but when her adoptive father dies, she finds a link to all the questions. A trunk of her mother’s filled with various things of the past help will help create the future of this town. Just as everything seems as though it has been solved, an invitation arrives from her mother’s sister, who was thought to be dead. When Naomi, her mother, and Lizzie take a trip to Ireland, they will find how, the past, the present, and the future have connected them all.
I thought this book was overall unexpectedly good. It was more of a mystery than I thought, and it had loveable, misfit characters. It was hooking and heartwarming, and it showed that family isn’t who you’re related to, but who loves you. I would recommend it for 10 and up, because it was confusing with two plot lines. There are also some scary parts where people are plotting a murder. So overall, I give it 5 out of 5 stars for its creative style, witty characters, and hooking plots.
