Ember Leferrier had a normal life. Hence the word “Had.” She’s been stuck in a hospital for exactly eight months because she was in a deadly car crash that nearly killed her. But, after eight months in rehabilitation, Ember is free to go home; and start a normal life again. The only question is, how can you go back to your normal life when you do not even know who you are anymore?
“In pitch dark I go walking in your landscape.” – Radiohead
This is how the book Loud Awake and Lost by Adele Griffin starts off. The book has a mysterious aura too it, which fits the plot perfectly. It is filled with horror, adventure, mystery, and romance. Throughout the story we travel alongside Ember looking for answers and clues to what exactly led to her accident. We stand with her as she tries to become the person she used to be and find herself again. The words on the page become a screen and it feels as if you are watching a movie.
We get to experience flashbacks of Ember’s previous life which only confuses us more as we frantically flip through the pages trying to figure out this mystery. And the emotions that the reader feels are pure and whole. The ending has a grappling twist that sends you over the edge and re-reading again and again trying to figure out how this could be.
This book is strictly for mature audiences only (13+) because of “mature” behavior. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a thrilling novel.
