The average cow eats 24 pounds of hay a day. What goes in must go out. As a result of eating 24 pounds of hay a day, a cow defecates roughly 67 pounds of feces a day. Imagine what happens at the 2014 stock show with thousands of cows!

When I talked to Lonnie Thomas of Thomas and Sons Farms at the Stock Show, he said his cows usually poop 6-7 times a day. After the cow does his business, the owner scoops the steaming feces out of the hay, walks to the end of each “row”, and dumps the waste into a wheelbarrow at the end of each row. After the wheelbarrow is full, employees of the National Western Stock Show bring the wheelbarrow out to cement containers. After these containers are full they are brought to a giant pile to compost. The pile is huge, and contains poop from many years of the stock show. It is not brought anywhere because it is too expensive to relocate or dispose of this massive pile that contains every animal's dung that is at the stock show. That's a lot of poop!
