Secrets According to Humphrey is the 10th book in a series by Betty G. Birney. Each book tackles a different grade-school challenge. Humphrey is a small classroom pet hamster with a huge heart. He learns along with his classmates from his cage.
When the class start to learn about ancient Egypt and hieroglyphics, the students become enthusiastic about making their own secret languages and private clubs. Some begin to feel left out because they weren’t invited to be in some of the clubs. Humphrey feels sad for his classmates because of how unfriendly they are being to each other!
I liked this book for many reasons, including that he and his neighbor friend Og the frog share many secrets themselves together, including that Humphrey can break out of his cage! I liked this book for many reasons, including the fact that this series is told in first person from the perspective of a hamster. I would recommend this book for kids ages 7-10 because of the themes and story line. If you have ever felt or might have made somebody feel left out or excluded from an activity or friend group, this is a good book because it teaches you how it makes people feel and what to do about it.
