Sharon Draper has written 28 books and had her book, “Out of My Mind” on the national bestseller list for 9 months. She grew up reading, but had never dreamed of becoming an author.

Sharon had read every book in the children’s section of her library by the time she was 11, but had not thought of being a writer. She became a teacher, and taught for many years, until one day, she won a writing contest and there, her writing career was jump started. She says that when she’s thinking of the types of characters that she wants to put into a story, she thinks of the plot and what type of character will best drive the story. The plot shouldn’t drive the characters; the characters need to be the one’s pushing the plot and making it more interesting. When trying to think of the title of a story, Sharon says that sometimes, she knows the title before she even starts to write the book, but sometimes, it’s all the way into publishing before it’s named. It takes a while to come up with titles because she wants a title that is powerful and memorable.

Sharon does a really good job of writing what she knows and the real problems of today to intrigue her readers. For instance, her new book, “Panic” is about a 15-year old who is abducted. In the sequel to “The Battle of Jericho,” an 11th grader becomes pregnant. And in the book “Tears of a Tiger,” there is a student killed in a car crash. All of these incidents are real in today’s society, and told in very realistic ways.

Sharon Draper is a marvelous writer who is very in touch with our society today and does a marvelous job portraying these events in her books.
