Flicker and Burn is what the author calls “A heart-pounding mafia action-adventure.” This book is about high school student Sara Jane Rispoli. The Rispoli family has a special power that is called Cold Fury or, technically, ghiaccio furioso, or also called Enzyme GF. It is activated by a strong emotion. Usually for Sara Jane, it’s love fear, anger, or a really strong hate for someone or something.
The reason Sara Jane has to activate Cold Fury more than once in a short time is because of the Ice Cream Creatures. These are monsters that are trying to capture her that have bloody red pulsating eyes. They reason that they are called Ice Cream Creatures is because they chase Sara Jane in ice cream trucks painted completely black. They work for a company that is called Mr. Creamy Kone. This seems to be an innocent ice cream company that drives around neighborhoods giving innocent little kids ice cream. But for Sara Jane, they are her most terrifying nightmare come true. They appear almost everywhere and try to ruin her relationships, both her friends and her boyfriend, Max, who has no idea what’s happening or why Sara Jane won’t tell him why she’s always glancing over her shoulder when they are together. She does have some helpers, such as her friend Doug, who does all of the research for her. Most of his research involves Sara Jane’s family who went missing over a year ago. She thinks that the Ice Cream Creatures have something to do with her family and are related to them some how. She is trying to get to the Ice Cream Creature’s head quarters because she thinks that they are holding her family captive. The thing is, they are sneaky, suspicious, and out of sight. She never can tell where they are hiding until they are trying to kill her right at that moment.
I would give this book 4 ½ stars out of 5. In some parts there could have been a lot more detail but in other parts, it is perfectly detailed and graphic. It might actually be a little to graphic for some readers. I would give it an 11 and up age limitation. This is for some language and adult content. Though this stuff is minor, some parents might think it a little bit to mature. But, if you feel that you can handle it, I definitely recommended this to any adventurous readers that like action and adventure with the slightest bit of love and romance in between.
