Zane and the Hurricane by Rodman Philbrick is about a boy named Zane and his dog, Bandit who go to New Orleans to visit Zane’s grandmother he never even knew existed.

First, he didn’t want to be there, but, it only got worse when the forecast predicted a hurricane. In 2005, on August 23 Hurricane Katrina started forming over the Bahamas. It wasn’t expected to hit New Orleans but as it passed over the Gulf of Mexico it picked up speed, changed course and headed for New Orleans. When the full force of the hurricane hit the city, it broke the levees, flooded the city, and left a path of devastation.

When the flood starts Zane and his dog Bandit are stuck in his grandmother’s house. Her name is Miss Trissy. Miss Trissy is well known throughout the neighborhood for her singing in church. During evacuation Bandit jumped out of the van and ran away through the traffic. Zane followed the dog until they got back to Zane’s grandmother’s house. After the wind calmed down the flood started. Zane and his dog had to find a way out quick! The rest of the story is about how Zane and Bandit survive. In doing so they encounter snakes, they unsuccessfully use a helicopter they find, and they get held at gunpoint.

The author could have done a better job showing other character’s points of view. If the story was a little bit longer the author could have done that. I recommend this book 7 years and up because it might not make much sense to younger kids. I also think you would like this book if you want to learn about Hurricane Katrina.
