The Shadow Throne, by Jennifer A. Nielsen, is the third book in The Ascendance trilogy. Jaron is a King who hates his position. Having lived as an orphan for many years, he is full of bright energy and hates all of his responsibilities. His leg wound, earned from a previous fight with the Captain of the Guard, prevents him from taking the upper hand in this war.

 

The precious kingdom of Carthya is in grave danger. King Vargan wishes to control the land and create a massive empire. In doing so, he captures Imogen, a servant girl who Jaron once loved. Refusing to let him go, Mott, Jaron’s right hand man, ventures to save her and all the prisoners. But there’s a lot more in store for him.

 

Throughout his perilous journey, Jaron will do whatever he can to save his Kingdom, Carthya. He will do anything within his power, and more. In order to accomplish his dangerous task, he must risk his life and much, much more. He’ll hold out as long as he can, but he may not have enough time. Along his journey, Jaron will have to keep his friendship, but he will receive such a shocked, he could destroy his friendship.

 

But will it be enough? Can Jaron stop King Vargan alone, or will he need help? Will the menacing King Vargan steal and ravage Carthya of its agricultural farmlands and its magnificent springs? Jaron will try to stop him, but it may be too late. In order to win the war, he has to risk losing everything important to him, is that a risk he’s willing to take for his kingdom? But one thing is for certain, Jaron’s on the end of the rope, and it’s not going to get any longer.
