Half a Chance is a fairly short story that will captivate your heart and your emotions. This is a novel written by author Cynthia Lord. It is a book about a family who moves to a new location during the summer and the main character Lucy meets the boy next door, Nate Bailey, his sister, Emily, and his grandmother, Grandma Lilah.
Lucy’s father is a famous photographer who takes pictures for public papers and magazines. Lucy has always been a bit jealous of him. It seems to her that most of the time, he is more involved in his work then with her and her mother. She just wants him to notice the pictures that she takes that she feels are worthy of his attention. But once they move, he’s off on another business trip, this time to Arizona. But, soon after he leaves. Lucy finds a flyer for a photography contest that her dad is judging but is worried that she can’t enter because her dad is the judge and she doesn’t want it to look like he is picking favorites. She starts to hang out with her next door neighbor, Nate and tells him about the contest. They start looking for picture opportunities and find several along the beach and on the shore. They go on loon patrol, go hiking, and just hang out as good friends. But, then there is Meagan, Nate’s old friend that seems to be jealous of Lucy because of her being friends with Nate. Does Lucy and Nate’s friendship a budding romance or are they just good friends?
I would give this book 3 ½ out of 5 stars because it wasn’t as interesting as I thought it would be but it still had a good story line with good characters and a good plot. I would recommend this novel to kids ages 9-12 because there are some scenes that might be too much to understand for younger kids and it would probably bore the older kids. But, other than that, I would recommend this to you if you like stories of friendship and books about risking things for the people you love.
