Twelve year old Kester was locked away in a room big enough to fit his bed, away from home, unable to talk to humans, with all known animals dead from the red-eye disease, and having to eat a gloopy, mysterious formula for meals three times a day.

One day, Kester heard a weird, raspy voice coming from a cockroach. Shortly after, a flock of bird breaks into his room by smashing his window and telling him to come with them. He was later informed that only he could save the rest of the living organisms from the contagious and deadly disease. For he was the only person whom could talk to animals. Will he be able to save them? Read The Last Wild by Piers Torday to find out what happens to Kester and the creatures.
