The book “Space Rocks” by Tom O’Donnell is a space comedy about an alien named Chorkle who meets the “fur-headed” species, which is what he calls humans when he first spies on them. Chorkle is an Xotonian who lives on an asteroid called Gelo. They have four arms, two legs, and five antennas, each with an eye on top. Their regular skin color is a turquoise color like Uranus but they also can change colors like a chameleon to camouflage themselves.
When Chorkle meets the humans, he frightens them, and they tie Chorkle up with a rope. They learn to trust Chorkle after he rescues a human that was stuck. After a few days of being with the humans, Chorkle learns English, and that is when their adventures begin.
What makes this book so unique is Chorkle tells the story. Most alien stories are from our perspective. As he tells it, the astronaut kids came into his world with their strange objects, like video games on pop up screens, jet-powered bicycles, and “Feeney’s Original Astronaut Ice Cream Bars” which he craves throughout the story.
The story is creative and funny in describing the action and plot in ways you wouldn’t expect. This story would be great for kids ages 8-12 who are interested in aliens, space, and fantasy. So if you want to learn who the enemy and hero are in this story (because all stories do) then read the book “Space Rocks!”, you may be surprised on who they are!
